Roberta Lamnin's Camp Pix – 1951-61

1950's Alum, Roberta Lamnin, brought us some surprises to this year's Reunion
(in addition to her enthusiasm about all things Camp-related).

She's also the Alum who lives closest to Camp –
13 miles away, in Dingman's Ferry, PA)

• She was there when the original owners (brothers Meyer and Saul Herman) ran the Camp
• She was a Camper of Judy Herman's (Dave Herman's older sister, and soon-to-be wife of Jerry Turner, Pool Head, and Camp owner right before Mendy)
• She has vivid memories of the Flood of 1955 (which took the life of more than 80 Walpack area residents
• She was a bunkmate of Vivki Dick (sister of Marty and Steve Dick)

Let's take a trip back in time to Prom Nite, Visiting Day, Picture Day and some post-Camp pix from 1985 – the view of the River from the Amphitheatre and the stone pillars at the entrance to Camp (how many of us made THAT trek to reconnect with the memories of our youth ???)

Part 2 coming soon:
Roberta was the guest speaker at the
2008 Walpack Historical Society Presentation.
The featured topic... Camp Pokono Ramona !

SCOTT GREENE'S BUNK PIX - 1964 - 66

Even though Scott Greene attended Camp for only 3 summers,
he has razor-sharp memories of those days.
Check out his bunk pix and recollections !

Flashback to 1964: Marv Fleishman was Head Counselor; Jay Goldstein, Carl Slotnick and Richie Mandor were waiters. Mark Jonas and Hank Snow were Counselors.

Fast-forward to 1966: the Senior Boys lived in "S1", atop Bunks 1 + 2, making their own Camp activity schedule. Their Comedy Song, "The Trailer Men of Pokono", parodied the Bimmies' living accommodations: "...trailer men of Pokono... they live in buses where none will go...

Their well-planned raids often "landed" them in the bunks of Jamie Greissman and Diane Resnick.

1964-66 TRIVIA QUIZ (hints in parentheses)
– What S1 Camper slept with his eyes open ? (RP)
– Who could "roll" his stomach ? (SL)
– Who used to put on a mask and put his head in a bowl ? (SD)

– What counselor wrote to parents, telling them how their kids were doing ? (HS)
– Who was Scott Greene's cousin (All-Around Camper in 1966) ? (SF)
– What job did "Slim" have ? (before Ira Mandor)

Some names to remember: Steve Michaels, Mike Briar, Mitch Glaser, Larry Meyers, Jeff Reiman, Mike Gross, Stu and Alan Packer, Larry Castle, Larry Wolf, Howie Werthheimer

Who remembers "Uncle Jerry" coming to their house to "sign you up" ?

ALUMNI MAP - WHERE WE LIVE

I've been wanting to do this project for 2 years, now.
Thanks to Scott Bard, who located an editable Google Map application, I've been able to "flag" where 86 of us live.

Simply click on a red flag to see which Alum lives there.
In areas where alot of Alumni live, you'll have to "zoom in"
to see all the flags (click the "+" icon).
"Pan" around with your cursor to see more of the map.

Anyone who wants to be added to the map, just send me your name and the city (or town) that you live in !

It's amazing how close some of us live to each other.
See if you can locate those of us who live on other continents.

PASSOVER WITH MENDY

Hi All,

My family and I just spent a fabulous Passover Week at one of Mendy's Passover Hotels... just miles from Camp in the Poconos.

It was a treat to spend time with Pauline, her daughter Suri and her family... topped off by an appearance from Mendy !

First, we gave him a time-honored Dining Hall "Dedication"... followed by his Passover greeting to the Alumni...

See them both, below !

A HAPPY + HEALTHY PESACH TO EVERYONE

Everything's been cleaned, covered or put away... you've dug out those old "Maxwell House" Haggadahs... the matzah balls and brisket are all cooked... the Manischewiitz is in the fridge... nothing left to do but wait for Uncle Max and Aunt Minnie to arrive with a box of macaroons and some gifts for the kids.

It's that time of year again... May it be a healthy and happy one for all the Alumni and their families.

STILL HERE !

Hi All !
Hope everyone is doing well and keeping those
rekindled Camp friendships going.

I haven't abandoned the site - just temporarily unable to devote time to it due to job-search
(and because I've "run out" of new items to post).

We've had 10 recent check-ins: Leslie Fink, Sharon Freeman,
Gayle Weinstein, Jordan Fox, Laurie Gold, Sherry Levenson, Annette Ernst, Mike Alexander, Bruce Fisch, Steven Marks,
Jeff and Rob Enoch
.
(e-mails links have not been set up yet)

No word on Reunion 2009 yet.
Is there interest in returning to Camp for an afternoon ?
(other suggestions welcome)

May all be well.

Randy

1973 PROPERTY APPRAISAL PIX

While we were getting ready for the Summer of '73,
the Federal Government was busy preparing to buy out the landowners
in the area - including Mendy and Harold.

They sent appraisers to take pictures, draw diagrams and measure
all the buildings on every property.

Due to some unbelievable "luck" (Don Stieh from the WHS and
Michelle Jacques from the NPS), we have those original pictures and diagrams to look at.

So, if you want to see what was written on the stone pillars at the entrance to Camp, find out how tall the handball court was, see the
Dining Hall or count how many walls the Roundhouse had...
download the PDF and have a look.

REUNION 2008 RECAP

We had a great time at Camp !!!

Here's some video of Mendy shmoozing with
David Zellman + Warren Rubenstein:

Here's some of the pictures we took...

(click HERE to see larger-sized pix in the Reunion Album)

Thanks go to the following Alumni, who sent in their Reunion pictures: Brad Perlow, David Zellman, Shelley Brauner, Lonny Siegel, Alan Fromm and Alan Wald. Whoever has Reunion pix they'd like to post, please send them to me

Here's what we had to say about the day:

- I think everyone had a great time seeing old friends. I know I did.

- The reunion was so amazing! I don't really have words to describe the feelings that I still have.

- What a great time. I am still sorting out the memories... and they are just getting better ! I am looking forward to the next gathering.

- WOW ! Very sentimental day ! It was so great to see everyone - talk and laugh... remembering things I have not thought about in years. Best of all - we all went back in time and laughed about wonderful times we had in the seventies !!!
- For a few hours we were able to step back in time and walk the hallowed ground of Camp with our friends and memories of the past. It was a special day.

- Great day. Great people. Great memories. Seeing everybody reminds me how special our summers together were. It was really wonderful seeing all. This should not be the last time we all get together. We should all continue to enjoy the good times.

- Who would have thought that so many people would travel from all parts of the country to share their memories and love for one another? Although it was 35 years, it almost seemed like yesterday.

- What a FANTASTIC day this has been... seeing everyone again brought back a flood of fond memories, and it was absolutely wonderful connecting with everyone again! Let's try not to let another 35 years go by till we all get together like this again! I honestly don't think I am going to be able to sleep tonight... I am going to be playing back in my head all the pictures I collected today...THANK YOU ALL for helping to make this day such a special one that I will cherish always! I can't believe how much fun it was, and how the memories just came flooding back... I think the best part of the day was being able to see - and touch - the people that we were so close with and still feel that connection that time could not sever. The people I reconnected with are still the same people I loved at 14, 15 and 16.

- What a great day!!! I can't even believe that it actually happened. It was just wonderful seeing everyone after such a long time. Seeing Mendy and Pauline was just the topping on the cake. Being at Camp just brought back many, many fabulous memories.

- The reunion was great. We all share a common bond of fond memories and affection for Camp. It was a fantastic feeling being on the campgrounds again.

- I feel truly blessed to have reconnected with all these wonderful memories and people. It was so much fun and I can't wait to do it again.

- I had a blast at the reunion. Seeing such great friends and catching up as if mere days instead of decades have gone by, was heartwarming.

- My first intense moment was seeing the sign to "Flatbrookville". When I drove into the parking lot I thought of how I stood there every Visiting Day waiting for my parents to arrive. Mendy and Pauline made the day complete. Spending the day with all of you was truly worth everything. What a great day.

- What a wonderful day it was. I so enjoyed seeing everyone and it was almost surreal to actually be on the campgrounds. As I know all of you feel, the years we spent at Camp were something special. It really was a beautiful place to spend our summers growing up. At least for a few hours on Sunday it felt like time stood still. I hope we will see each other again soon.

- It's two days later and I'm still smiling! What a wonderful day! From the second I arrived, it smelled exactly as I remembered it. I knew I was home again. How wonderful it was seeing old friends from summers that I will never forget. Hearing Richie Mandor's voice... I closed my eyes and it was 1971 again. As the sun was setting I didn't want to leave... I was ready for evening activity and a trip to the Canteen in the Social Hall. It was a day I will cherish forever.

- What an amazing day!!! Very emotional. I LOVED seeing everyone. I agree with all of you... It brought back such wonderful memories of our youth.

- It was truly an amazing day, one I'll never forget. It was a magical experience for me. Thanks to everyone who shared their memories and their joy. I hope to see you all again soon.

- And from Mendy and Pauline: Everything was SUPERLATIVE!!! Not enough words in the dictionary to describe what a wonderful morning you gave Mendy and I. We didn't get home til 1 am and haven't stopped talking about how emotional and marvelous it was seeing everyone - a day to remember!!!

BUNK 5 REUNION - JUNE 19, 2008

Look who got together recently...
the "Legendary" Bunk 5 Campers of Davey Greenberg.

It was a memorable evening at the Palm Restaurant, in Manhattan. In attendance were Mitch Tanzman, Steve Tabor, Steven Yellin, Ronnie Gold, Mike Messenger, Zac Levokove and Lonny Siegel.

As Lonny Siegel recalls, "much of the evening was spent re-telling the wild antics of our group... the many fires we built (in and out of the bunk), our Counselors and bunkmates, how we were robbed of our final year as Senior Campers and speculation about who would have won the awards of 1974.

We all plan on staying in touch and getting together again in the future.

What's read, white & blue and full of names ?

A signed Camp Pillowcase, of course. !!!
where else could you find such deeply felt thoughts as these...

- "Diamonds may glitter, roses may die - friends may forget you, but never - I"
- "I really loved having you to share my summer fun with"
- "It was great knowing you - you were one of the people that made my summer great."

Re-live a bit of those feelings that we expressed to friends (and had them express to us) in the waning days of Camp, as we "take a peek" at Sue Wald's signed pillowcases from 1971-73.

SUSAN WALD'S SIGNED PLATES - 1971-73

What stories are "hidden" behind each signature on these plates ?

Was plate-signing an OPA initiation ritual or just a
memento of Camp friendships ?

- Why did Richie Marmaro sign as "Joe Namath" ?
- What prompted Richie Siegel to nickname himself "Cazzie" ?
- What's the connection between Phil Kaplan and "Oscar Homolka" ?
- Who were "Running Bear" and "Smashing Bonamolo Jr" ?

If you know the stories behind these mysterious
"hand-inscribed paper discs", enlighten us !!!

Lonny Siegel writes: OPA "initiation" required one to collect a number of Counselor signatures, in addition to maintaining a "vow of silence" for the day. You were allowed up to 3 infractions, which were denoted by notches on a stick worn around your neck

WOODSTOCK MEETS WALPACK - 1970

Back when Vietnam, Kent State and Richard Nixon were making headlines... Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull and James Taylor ALMOST played a concert just up the road from Camp.

Here's the story of "The Music Festival that Never Happened"...

(click on the picture to download a PDF of the story)

Scott Swerdlin was on his way back to Camp - just sitting in the back of the Red truck with the rest of the Division 5 Boys - revelling in the 6-4 win against Logs and Twigs' Softball Team. Crossing the Dingman's Ferry Bridge, he glimpsed several signs along the road proclaiming, "FESTIVAL CANCELLED". "What's that all about ?", he wondered. No sooner did he stop to ponder the matter when his concentration was broken by the sounds of First Call resonating through the forest. It was almost time for Lunch. The mystery would have to wait - for now.

Scott would finish the summer (and the decade) without finding out just what the mystery was, but he never stopped wondering...

Fast forward 38 years... Scott's chance re-connection to some old Campmates via internet... a history buff's chance discovery of some Campers who spent summers right in the heart of his cherished boyhood home... a flurry of e-mails... and the story of the "Music Festival that Never Happened" begins to take shape...

Let's watch it unfold as we read the recollections of Don Stieh, the history "buff" who was there...

------------------------------

It was the summer of 1970. I had just finished my freshman year at Rutgers. Kent State, Earth Day, and Vietnam War protests were all fresh in my mind. The Generation Gap was in evidence everywhere - it was the Establishment against the Counterculture... and the "battle lines" were about to be drawn in our own little corner of the world - Walpack Township.

Having missed Woodstock the previous summer, my friends and I were psyched for the Harmonyville Music Festival - 6 days of Rock 'n Roll by some of the biggest names in Rock - Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull, Richie Havens, Chicago ! Even as we looked forward to it, we knew the devastating effect it might have on our magnificent valley - several hundred thousand people trampling through our backyard could wreak havoc on the environment. I was torn, but still eager to party !

The site of the Festival was the Radcliff Farm, right along the River and 2 miles North of Flatbrookville, on Old Mine Road. My family's place was in Walpack, just 5 miles upriver.

Most of the community was dead set against the Festival. After Woodstock, the images of mud-soaked humanity, roads clogged for miles in all directions and mountains of trash were nightmares we didn't want. Public pressure quickly developed to head off a repeat of that "disaster".

As word of the Festival spread, the outside world discovered Walpack ! Eager Festival goers started showing up early. Townspeople began to complain about naked hippies wandering around and swimming in the river. One man even claimed to have run off a trespasser with his rifle.

Eventually, the State got involved and a Court Injuction was issued, prohibiting the Festival from being held. The rationale was that Walpack was an isolated area with minimal public services, no method of crowd control and no way to ensure the health and safety of several hundred thousand Festival-goers. Newspapers featured the picture of a Police cruiser parked on the Flatbrookville Bridge, showing that it was only a single lane road, and couldn't possibly handle the volume of traffic the Festival was sure to generate.

As part of the Injunction, the Festival promoters had to advertise its cancellation. Signs were posted on all area roads.
On the two weekends leading up to the festival, all roads into Walpack were blocked by State Police - to keep out hippies and other "undesirables". I kept a copy of our Walpack Township tax bill on me at all times to show that I actually lived in the area, in case I was ever stopped by Police.

August 4th came and went without fanfare. The much ballyhooed festival never took place. All the hullaballoo died out rather quickly after that, and life in Walpack returned to "normal". Although he Establishment had won this round, and protected us from the much feared "hippie assault" on our environment... it would be the Establishment itself that would eventually destroy the Walpack we knew and loved... in their pursuit of the Tocks Island Dam Project. It would take the environmental movement - itself, an offspring of the counterculture, to eventually defeat the Dam project... but not until after we were dispossessed of our community.

------------------------------

And so, the circle closes. One boy's curiosity turns out to be an entire chapter in another man's life and their convergence, 38 years later, solves a mystery for one and leaves bittersweet memories for the other. But out of this convergence, another chapter is opened in the History of Walpack... that of Camp Pokono Ramona.

(thanks to Scott Swerdlin for pursuing his long-time curiosity about this event, and to Don Stieh, of the Walpack Historical Society, for bringing the details to light)
